Summary and Highlights of Achievements

 

China Medical University (CMU) has long been committed to promoting teaching, research, and medical service quality. CMU focuses on the cultivation of students’ professional abilities, humanistic quality, and global vision. With the funding from the Phase I of Higher Education Sprout Project (HESP), CMU has accomplished the following achievements:

1.Implement Innovative Teaching and Promote the Quality of Teaching

(1)CMU implements innovative learning and promotes learning flexibility. Through the digital technology and interdisciplinary integration, CMU has successfully enhanced the crucial 4C (Critical thinking, Communication, Collaboration, Creativity) abilities of students. The UCAN analysis has revealed that CMU students have made a significant progress in the eight core competencies in the 2018 academic year, indicating the success of CMU in promoting key abilities of students.

(2)CMU strengthens the teaching support system, including smart software and hardware equipment, electronic teaching materials, and AI learning platform. CMU also rewards faculty members for their innovative teaching and excellent quality of teaching with supplemental salary.

2.Develop Key University Features

(1)CMU has exceeded the setting goals in the numbers of National Programs, Research Grants, and papers published in high quality journals. In 2018, two CMU faculty members received Outstanding Research Awards from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), and CMU teams received a total of 8 National Innovation Awards in 2018-2019.

(2)CMU invited more than 50 top international scholars to deliver lectures, and our faculty members participated in 15 joint symposiums held with international renowned universities in 2018-2019. To broaden the global vision of students, CMU funded 575 outstanding students to study or conduct research abroad.

(3)CMU actively promotes academia-industry cooperation, and CMU faculty members have won several National Innovation Awards. Moreover, the spin-off companies of CMU have been well recognized. The cosmetic brand “Coexist” developed by CMU Department of Cosmeceutics has obtained several patents, demonstrating a great example of academia-industry cooperation.

3.Promote and Share the Resources of Higher Education with the Public

(1)CMU implements learning progress and public service plan and cultivates students’ diverse learning momentum. In 2019, CMU Pharmacy student Jing-Rong Liu received the “Educational Volunteer Service Youth Award” (only five students won the award for the entire nation) from the Ministry of Education (MOE). In addition, the CMU Pharmacy service team won the “Silver Medal Award” in the Health Hub Service Team Competition and the CMU Chinese medical service team received the “Youth Volunteer Service Participation Project” with the highest funding by the Youth Department Administration, MOE.

(2)In 2019, CMU provided subsidies for economically or culturally disadvantaged students up to 2,145 times, and assisted the underprivileged students up to 10,304 times.

(3)CMU shares resources with local communities. The Lifu Museum of Chinese Medicine provides an open environment for public learning. CMU also holds a variety of science camps for high school students.

(4)CMU establishes an open University Affairs System and an online interactive visual University Affairs Platform providing topic analysis and results inquiry. Moreover, CMU sets up three (student, teacher, and inter-school) performance indicators to further explore potential problems.

4.Fulfill University Social Responsibilities

(1)CMU has carried out projects in four aspects according to the UN sustainable development goals:

i. Long-Term Care Plan for the Elderly

ii. Medical Protection Plan for the Community

iii. Featured Community Industry and Community Care Plans

iv. Deep Connections with High Schools and Local Communities

The 8 colleges of CMU have implemented 22 social responsibilities projects.

(2)CMU faculty members and students have accomplished 14 publications, master’s thesis or MOST undergraduate projects related to social responsibilities.
